I have a confession: I love the craft of computer design! Sometimes it’s illustrating a really bad pun to turn it into a t-shirt; other times it’s photoshopping a series of comps for a live action video about the wonders of Prego Spaghetti Sauce. And I especially like it when I am being directed by someone else’s concept. Basically, I thrive on opportunities to pool imaginations with great creatives and make this super etch-a-sketch of mine jump through hoops to help create something that only ever existed as a wisp of an idea before.
Since jumping back into freelancing at the start of 2018, I have worked with some of the premier agencies in Richmond, and have worked with their creatives to generate top quality work for their clients. I’ve helped the good people at The Martin Agency create some storyboard comps for a TIAA commercial; I’ve retouched a whole slew of images from NBC Universal for a series of self-promo commercials produced by Arts & Letters Creative Co.; and for my friends at West Cary Group I’ve cleaned up Powerpoint presentations for Capital One, generated animated banner ads for Atlantic Union Bank, and created vector illustrations of new facilities and technologies for AlexRenew. And that’s just the tip of a very busy iceberg!
Prior to my reentry into freelancing, I spent 7 years helping multiple art and creative directors at The Martin Agency/S2 Creative generate over 1500 pieces of original content per year for the Walmart Smart Network. As the Senior Studio Artist with S2, it was my job to not only serve as studio artist, creating both vector- and photo-based comps for a variety of different art directors, reworking supplied art or recreating from scratch to meet our specs, etc., I also served as digital illustrator and retoucher, creating the art used in the final animation and retouching studio photography to create the best looking ads possible for our clients. Speaking of clients, S2 had a client list that most agencies would envy: Dole Food Company, Hewlett Packard, Starbucks, Colgate, Disney, Glade, KraftHeinz, Febreze, just to name a few.
Before my time with The Martin Agency/S2 Creative, I served 17 years as lead production artist for several of Richmond, VA’s largest printers, honing my craft as a digital artist by helping the best of Richmond’s advertising community see to it that their digital art printed correctly. Once the print industry began moving in the direction of the PDF workflow, which required the artists to provide press-ready art to the printer themselves, I read the writing on the wall and took my problem-solving and imaging skills to the creative side of the street. Since 2005 I have served the Richmond advertising community as a print production coordinator, imaging specialist, digital illustrator (in both bitmap and vector), photo retoucher, studio artist, and occasionally art director. Three years with Rightminds (a Richmond area marketing company) working on accounts including LandAmerica, S&K Famous Brands, and Special Olympics; two years as a freelancer working with Qorvis Communications/Spurrier Media on the Virginia Lottery account, then The Martin Agency picked me up for their new S2 division, and here we are!
When not in front of the computer, I can often be found working around my property in eastern New Kent, kayaking, or making music with friends.
