Orion's Belt and Sword

Here we have a wide-field image of Orion's Belt and Sword taken from the Florida Keys during the 1995 Winter Star Party. A Tokina 80-200 mm lens was used on a Nikon F3 camera and the film was hypered Fujicolor 400 HG. I believe the exposure was about half an hour at f/4. If you look carefully, you can see two satellite tracks in the upper right corner of the image. The over-all red tint in the sky background comes from the large amount of subtle nebulosity which spans this entire region of the sky. The Orion Nebula is merely a significantly brighter part of this huge mass of gas and dust, as is the part which forms the backdrop for the Horsehead Nebula at the upper left.
