Aurora Over the Lake at Wellesley

The evening of November 20th, 2003 saw a rather unusual event; aurora visible in the skies over Richmond, Virginia.

This image was taken near my home in the neighborhood of Wellesley in the far West End of Richmond. One might think that aurora would be visible to the north, but this picture was taken facing to the southwest.

This image was made using a Nikon D1x digital camera and a Nikkor 35-70mm f/2.8 zoom lens. The exposure was 30 seconds at f/2.8 using an ISO of 400. In Photoshop, a "dark frame" (a 30 second exposure taken with the lens cap on) was used to subtract the noise normally present in such a long exposure with this camera.
